Modern Vienna and Christmas in Vienna – from the Christmas Markets to Klimt and Schiele

End of november is the whole city of Vienna ready for Christmas. The sparkling festive lights have been switched on and markets, ice-rinks and villages are popping up all over the city. Each year opens a new Christmas Village in Vienna.

In der Adventszeit folge ich den Spuren des Brauchtums und der religiösen Ursprünge von Weihnachten. Neben den Weihnachtsmärkten zeige ich dabei Erwachsenen, Familien und Kindern die ruhigen und besinnlichen Plätze der Stadt. Zum Jahreswechsel geht es um die verschiedenen Formen des Glücks anhand von Persönlichkeiten und wie sie zu ihrem ganz persönliches Glück gefunden haben, ganz nach dem Motto „Jeder ist seines Glückes Schmied“ und was man dazu heute in Wien dazu macht. Im neuen Jahr zeige ich die Geschichte der Balltradition und wie sich in Wien die verschiedenen Tänze und Bälle in den Palais entwickelt haben. Frauen haben dabei eine wesentliche Rolle gespielt. Ihr Einfluss auf das Gesellschafts- und Kulturleben in Wien vom 18. Jahrhundert bis heute beleuchte ich in einer eigenen Führung zu den Wiener Salons und ihrer Bedeutung für das Geistesleben der Stadt.

At the end of November the whole city of Vienna is ready for Christmas. The sparkling festive lights have been switched on and markets, ice-rinks and Christmas villages are popping up all over the city. Each year guests can find a new Christmas village in Vienna. During my Christmas walking tours I show you the most joyful and silent sides of Christmas in Vienna, for example the Christmas market on the Freyung. This Christmas market, which opened in 1772, is also one of Vienna’s oldest ones. Today you can find extraordinary handicraft, glass decorations, traditional mangers and ceramics there. In addition to the Christmas walking tours I offer tours in the footsteps of Vienna 1900 in the Leopold Museum to see the master pieces by Klimt and Schiele. I look behind the facades of the Palaces along the Ring boulevard, which became the setting of famous balls and court ceremonies of Vienna`s high bourgeoise (oder upper-class) families and its aristocracy.
